One Monday, three answers

Anzac Day 2026 falls on a Saturday. New South Wales declares the Monday a public holiday, the Victorian contracting calendar takes it as an RDO, and South Australia works. Ask the API the same question in three jurisdictions and the answer changes each time, with the reason attached.

The full response carries every row on the date, the restricted holidays that apply only to a named area, and the edition it came from. Rows for a range come from /api/v1/calendars/{jurisdiction}?from=&to=, as JSON or CSV.

How it is built

Each edition is read cell by cell from the calendar its branch publishes, then checked line by line. Public holidays are the official Fair Work Ombudsman dates, school holidays are the complement of the education department term dates, and RDOs, shutdowns and industry days are what the calendar prints. Where a calendar and the official list disagree, the data keeps the official value and records the calendar’s reading in the API. Where an RDO falls on a holiday that applies only to one area or sector, or to part of the day, both are recorded and the RDO decides the day.

Anzac Day 2026 falls on a Saturday and South Australia substitutes no Monday, so Monday 27 April is a working day here while it is a public holiday in NSW, WA and the ACT and an RDO in Victoria.
Australia Day 2027 is Tuesday 26 January (Fair Work), so this edition records the public holiday on that day. Confirm Monday 25 January with your employer.
Checked 2026-09-07 against the SafeWork SA public holiday list (the page refuses automated fetches; list supplied by Jack): all 15 public holidays for 2026, both 7 pm part-days and all four school-holiday ranges agree with this edition.

The poster shows no school holidays and no industry shutdown; the summer break is expressed as optional annual leave 5 to 9 January and the long-weekend blocks around Christmas.
Grey cells also cover the Saturday and Sunday of every designated long weekend (3-4 and 24-25 January, 26 April, 6-7 June, 3-4 October, 5-6 and 27 December); those are block shading, not holiday claims, and are not recorded.

The poster names 28 December "Boxing Day"; Fair Work lists Saturday 26 December as Boxing Day and Monday 28 December as the additional holiday. Both recorded.
Wednesday 23 December is recorded as the first day of annual leave, as on ETU Victoria's own calendar (updated February 2026); the poster published in October 2025 shows it as a Contracting RDO.

Monday 8 June is an RDO on the Queensland calendar; it is the King's Birthday holiday in most other jurisdictions but not in Queensland, whose King's Birthday is 5 October.
The RDO split into industry and EBA days is carried from the CFMEU QLD/NT pocket calendar, whose dates are identical to the ETU poster.
Regional show holidays (from the Queensland Government table, one row per gazetted area, including the Royal Queensland Show for the Brisbane area) are recorded as restricted_public_holiday rows with the gazetted area as the scope; one applies to a given employer and none decides the jurisdiction-wide verdict.

The poster lists the observed Monday for Anzac Day and Boxing Day only; Fair Work also lists the Saturdays themselves (25 April, 26 December). Both recorded.

Fair Work lists the Regatta and Hobart Show as holidays only in certain areas including Hobart, and Recreation Day elsewhere; the calendar follows the Hobart reading. Those days are recorded as restricted_public_holiday rows with their area as the scope. Other restricted regional days (Launceston Cup, Devonport Cup, AGFEST, Burnie and Launceston Shows) are not on this calendar and not in this edition.
