One Monday, three answers

Anzac Day 2026 falls on a Saturday. New South Wales declares the Monday a public holiday, the Victorian contracting calendar takes it as an RDO, and South Australia works. Ask the API the same question in three jurisdictions and the answer changes each time, with the reason attached.

The full response carries every row on the date, the restricted holidays that apply only to a named area, and the edition it came from. Rows for a range come from /api/v1/calendars/{jurisdiction}?from=&to=, as JSON or CSV.

How it is built

Each edition is read cell by cell from the calendar its branch publishes, then checked line by line. Public holidays are the official Fair Work Ombudsman dates, school holidays are the complement of the education department term dates, and RDOs, shutdowns and industry days are what the calendar prints. When the poster and the official list disagree, the data carries the official value and records the disagreement, so a scheduler sees both.

Shutdowns and leave blocks: Industry lockdown (contracting industry shutdown), 2 Jan to 11 Jan; Industry lockdown (contracting industry shutdown), 7 Mar to 8 Mar; Industry lockdown (contracting industry shutdown), 6 June to 7 June; Industry lockdown (contracting industry shutdown), 3 Oct to 4 Oct; Industry lockdown (contracting industry shutdown), 19 Dec to 31 Dec.

School holidays (government schools): 1 Jan to 26 Jan; 11 Apr to 26 Apr; 4 July to 19 July; 26 Sept to 11 Oct; 12 Dec to 26 Jan.

  • Anzac Day 2026 falls on a Saturday and South Australia substitutes no Monday, so Monday 27 April is a working day here while it is a public holiday in NSW, WA and the ACT and an RDO in Victoria.
  • The poster colours Monday 25 January 2027 as the public holiday and prints Tuesday 26 January as an RDO; Australia Day 2027 is the Tuesday. Both listed under discrepancies.
  • Checked 2026-09-07 against the SafeWork SA public holiday list (the page refuses automated fetches; list supplied by Jack): all 15 public holidays for 2026, both 7 pm part-days and all four school-holiday ranges agree with this edition.

School holidays (government schools): 1 Jan to 1 Feb; 3 Apr to 21 Apr; 4 July to 20 July; 26 Sept to 12 Oct; 18 Dec to 27 Jan.

  • The poster shows no school holidays and no industry shutdown; the summer break is expressed as optional annual leave 5 to 9 January and the long-weekend blocks around Christmas.
  • Grey cells also cover the Saturday and Sunday of every designated long weekend (3-4 and 24-25 January, 26 April, 6-7 June, 3-4 October, 5-6 and 27 December); those are block shading, not holiday claims, and are not recorded.
  • Legend swatch: on this poster grey is the holiday and yellow the RDO; the ACT poster from the same branch uses the colours the other way round. Meaning was resolved against the Fair Work list, never the colour.

  • GRID VERSUS TEXT: the grid colours Monday 27 April green (public holiday) while the poster's own RDO list reads "APR 7, 8, 27 & 28" and Fair Work lists no Victorian holiday that day. Recorded as an RDO with the grid colour kept as a poster marking; listed under discrepancies.
  • Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday and Anzac Day (all Saturdays or Sundays) are coloured as lockdown weekends on the grid but appear in the poster's public-holiday text; recorded as public holidays with the lockdown also recorded.
  • The poster names 28 December "Boxing Day"; Fair Work lists Saturday 26 December as Boxing Day and Monday 28 December as the additional holiday. Both recorded.

School holidays (government schools): 1 Jan to 26 Jan; 3 Apr to 19 Apr; 27 June to 12 July; 19 Sept to 5 Oct; 12 Dec to 26 Jan.

Restricted holidays: 98 official days apply only to a named area or sector (Stanthorpe Annual Show, Allora Annual Show, Killarney Annual Show and more). They are in the API with their scope and never decide the jurisdiction-wide verdict.

  • Monday 8 June is an RDO on the Queensland calendar; it is the King's Birthday holiday in most other jurisdictions but not in Queensland, whose King's Birthday is 5 October.
  • The RDO split into industry and EBA days is carried from the CFMEU QLD/NT pocket calendar, whose dates are identical to the ETU poster.
  • Regional show holidays (from the Queensland Government table, one row per gazetted area, including the Royal Queensland Show for the Brisbane area) are recorded as restricted_public_holiday rows with the gazetted area as the scope; one applies to a given employer and none decides the jurisdiction-wide verdict.

  • The grid colours Saturday 4 April as a public holiday; Easter Saturday is not a Western Australian public holiday. Recorded as a poster marking only; listed under discrepancies.
  • The poster lists the observed Monday for Anzac Day and Boxing Day only; Fair Work also lists the Saturdays themselves (25 April, 26 December). Both recorded.

School holidays (government schools): 1 Jan to 28 Jan; 3 Apr to 13 Apr; 20 June to 13 July; 19 Sept to 5 Oct; 11 Dec to 26 Jan.

Restricted holidays: 5 official days apply only to a named area or sector (Alice Springs Show Day, Tennant Creek Show Day, Katherine Show Day and more). They are in the API with their scope and never decide the jurisdiction-wide verdict.

  • The RDO dates are those of the combined QLD/NT calendar; the CFMEU does not publish a separate NT schedule. Employers in the NT should confirm against their enterprise agreement.
  • Fair Work lists the Territory-wide NT holidays; the five regional show days come from an aggregator because nt.gov.au refuses automated fetches, and are recorded as restricted_public_holiday rows scoped to their town. Darwin Show Day (24 July) is corroborated by the CFMEU calendar.

Each calendar is linked to the branch that publishes it and never reproduced; the dates are facts, the poster is theirs. Sources and required attribution are listed at /api/v1/attribution.
