Study
Of the 17,735 mobile network sites the carriers report to the ACCC, 58 sat inside a wildfire mapped since July 2021, 1,091 were within 1 km of one and 7,875within 5 km. How far the fire maps reach differs by state: most end in mid or late 2025 and South Australia's in February 2026, while Queensland's stop in January 2024 and the Northern Territory's begin in January 2025. Measured on 21 October 2026.
| State | Inside | Within 1 km | Within 5 km | Wildfires mapped |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NSW | 17 | 502 | 3,358 | July 2021 to July 2025 |
| VIC | 5 | 141 | 1,980 | July 2021 to June 2025 |
| WA | 13 | 235 | 1,014 | July 2021 to Oct 2025 |
| SA | 0 | 76 | 613 | Sept 2021 to Feb 2026 |
| QLD | 9 | 52 | 382 | July 2021 to Jan 2024 |
| TAS | 3 | 45 | 334 | Sept 2021 to June 2025 |
| NT | 11 | 38 | 119 | Jan 2025 to Aug 2025 |
| ACT | 0 | 2 | 75 | Sept 2022 to Feb 2023 |
A site is counted in the state its records are placed in. One site on the New South Wales and Queensland border has records in both, and one site on the Adelaide coast, outside the council boundaries, has no state, so the national totals above are the count of distinct sites. A fire counts wherever it was mapped, so a site near a border is measured against fires on both sides.
| Operator | Inside | Within 1 km | Within 5 km |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telstra | 44 | 719 | 5,166 |
| Optus | 21 | 637 | 4,533 |
| TPG | 5 | 331 | 2,674 |
| Optus-TPG shared network | 11 | 184 | 1,078 |
A site shared by several networks counts once for each of them here, so the operator rows add up to more than the national total. The Optus-TPG shared network records repeat Optus sites.
